D’Aguilar on tourism: It won’t be the best Thanksgiving we’ve ever had

This Thanksgiving will not be the best one The Bahamas has had in terms of travelers, Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar told Guardian Business yesterday, explaining that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) warning to Americans not to travel will likely mean reduced numbers of travelers to this country.

“With the CDC giving the advice, it won’t be the best Thanksgiving we’ve ever had,” D’Aguilar said.

And with cruise lines likely delayed until the end of the first quarter next year, he said, there will be no cruise passenger buffer for one of the biggest travel holidays for Americans.

The CDC contends on its website that Americans should consider postponing travel this year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and stay at home, explaining that travel “can increase the chance of getting and spreading COVID-19”.

“More than 1 million COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States over the last seven days,” the CDC reported last week.

“As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.

“Travel may increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. Postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year.”

The CDC does offer recommendations for those Americans who do decide to travel.

“Wear a mask in public settings, like on public and mass transportation, at events and gatherings and anywhere you will be around people outside of your household,” the CDC stated.

“Avoid close contact by staying at least six feet apart (about two arm lengths) from anyone who is not from your household.

“Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60 percent alcohol). Avoid contact with anyone who is sick. Avoid touching your face mask, eyes, nose and mouth.”
