It was a productive week for Bahamian professional basketball players Lashann Higgs and Mark St. Fort as they turned in high-scoring performances for their respective teams in overseas hoops action.
Higgs was in action for her Embutidos Pajariel Bembibre in the Liga Femenina Endesa League on Saturday. She poured in a team-high 17 points in a heartbreaking 70-65 away loss against Ensino Lugo Club de Baloncesto at Pazo dos Deportes in Lugo, Spain.
In Japan, St. Fort was coming off his best game of the season to score 18 points for his Niigata Albirex in an 92-69 away loss against Kawasaki Brave Thunders last week Wednesday in Japan’s B1 League. The game was played at the Todoroki Arena in Kawasaki City, Japan.
Higgs, who is in her first professional season, was efficient from the field as she went 5-for-10 and connected one triple. She was 6-for-7 at the foul line in 20 minutes of play.
Ensino was a force to reckon with on the boards as they outrebounded Higgs and her team 28-17. In the paint, Ensino outscored Bembibre 50-24.
Bembibre jumped out to a 23-18 lead after the first quarter. They were in control for most of the game as they led 57-53 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Bembibre’s offense stalled as Ensino outscored them 17-8 to win the game.
With that loss, Bembibre dropped to a 1-7 win-loss record on the season as they sit in 15th position in the league.
The guard leads her team in averaging 13.3 points per game. She is averaging 25.1 minutes a contest.
The Harbour Island native and her team will be in action tonight in a home game against SPAR Girona in Bembibre, Spain, at 7:30, Spain time.
St. Fort narrowly missed out on a double-double as he pulled down nine boards. The forward was able to finish 5-for-9 from the field including 1-for-3 from deep to finished 55.6 percent from the field. St. Fort was perfect from the free-throw line as he finished 7-for-7.
The Brave Thunders were dominant in the win as they outscored St. Fort and his team in every quarter.
It was an almost even first quarter as Albirex stayed close with the quarter ending at 22-20 in favor of the Brave Thunders.
The second quarter saw the home team starting to separate themselves from the visitors as they went up 44-33 at the half.
The 11-point cushion was enough as they pushed the envelope in the second half, outscoring Albirex 48-36 to hold on to a blowout victory.
Albirex now sports a 3-7 win-loss record on the season to sit at ninth place in the Eastern Division in the B1 league.
In his previous game, St. Fort was a work horse as he scored a season-high 26 points against Kyoto Hannaryz off the bench. He was a motor as he only played in 19 minutes to finish 10-for-15 from the field. The Bahamian was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. He pulled in three rebounds.
He is averaging nine points this season. He is shooting a scorching 61.5 percent from the field.
Up next for St. Fort and Albirex is a tough back-to-back home matchup against the league leading Utsunomiya Brex in Niigata, Japan. The first game will be on Saturday at 5:05 p.m., Japan time. They play again on Sunday at 1:05 p.m., Japan time.
