It was a busy weekend for Kadeem Coleby and Mark St. Fort as they saw action this past Saturday and Sunday for their respective teams in the Japanese B1 League regular season.
Coleby was busy in Akita, Japan, as he and his Akita Happinets won both games against Osaka Evessa in a home game. St. Fort and his Niigata Albirex dropped two home games against Utsunomiya Brex in Niigata, Japan.
The Happinets won both of their games on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s win was a nail-biter as they won 73-72 over Evessa. On Saturday, they won more convincingly over Evessa with an 80-72 scoreline. With the two wins, the Happinets now have a 8-6 win/loss record and sit in sixth position in the Eastern Division.
In Niigata on Sunday, Albirex fell 85-67 to Brex. That game was closer than the Saturday game as they were blown out 99-57. The two losses over the weekend dropped them to 3-9 on the season as they sit in ninth position in the Eastern Division.
Coleby had a good weekend as he scored in double figures in both game. In Sunday’s contest, the center notched a double-double as he poured in 15 points and 13 rebounds for his team. He shot over 54 percent from the field as he went 6-for-11. He also went 3-for-6 from the free-throw line as two of those misses came late in the game. On the glass, the Wichita State University product pulled in three offensive boards and 10 boards on the defensive end. He showed his passing skills as he finished with three assists.
Defensively, Coleby was able to swat three shots and pick up one steal in a little under 36 minutes on the floor.
In Saturday’s game, Coleby managed to finish with 11 points as he went 5-for-7 from the field to shoot a blistering 71.4 percent. He missed out on an opportunity to end with a double-double as he pulled in nine rebounds. The center dished out two assists and finished with one steal to help his team to victory.
Since scoring eight points in his first game of the season, Coleby has been able to score in double digits every game since and he has shot over 53 percent on the season. In his last outing almost two weeks ago, he was spectacular against Sun Rockers Shibuya, scoring a season-high 30 points and 15 rebounds. He was rewarded for his effort, earning the B1 Player of the Week accolade.
On the season, the 6’ 9” center is averaging 14.8 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting a blistering 71 percent.
The Happinets have another home game, but this time they play Brex on Wednesday night at 7:05 Japan time.
Despite the loss on Sunday, St. Fort was a force to reckon with as he scored 24 points and pulled in five rebounds. He was 9-for-13 from the field to shoot a sizzling 69.2 percent. He showed that big men can shoot from the foul line as he was 6-for-7. St. Fort showed his passing skills with five assists. Defensively he had two blocked shots and one steal in the loss. He did all of this in a little over 31 minutes of play – a season high.
The former Wagner University player was able to score 20 points by the end of the third quarter.
It was a better game for him than Saturday where he was held to just nine points. It was not one of his best shooting games as the 6’ 7” forward made just two of his six shot attempts. However, he was perfect from the charity stripe, going 5-for-5. St. Fort also had one block, steal and assist.
The forward is averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 60.3 percent from the field on the season.
Albirex also return to action on Wednesday night. This time, St. Fort and his team will head on the road to Tokyo to play Alvark Tokyo at 7:05 p.m.
