Though the resort has made no official announcement as yet, Baha Mar is accepting bookings beginning December 17, according to its website.
When contacted for confirmation yesterday, Senior Vice President of Administration and External Relations at Baha Mar Robert Sands said he could only say that the property’s president may make an announcement of some sort “in very short order”.
“Any comments regarding the opening will be addressed by our president and I think in the not-too-distant future he may have something to say. But I’ll leave it to then,” he told Guardian Business.
On its website, Baha Mar maintained that the safety and well-being of its guests and colleagues remains a top priority, before advising that bookings would be accepted for December.
“In light of COVID-19, the hotel has temporarily suspended normal operations and is not currently offering restaurant, bar or other services at this time. The hotel will be accepting room reservations for stays from December 17, 2020 and beyond,” notes an advisory posted on the website.
Last month, Baha Mar President Graeme Davis said the resort cannot reopen until COVID-19 numbers in The Bahamas are lowered.
There have been over 6,700 COVID-19 cases in The Bahamas, of which 1,955 are active.
The reopening of the Baha Mar and Atlantis resorts are considered critical to the country emerging from the COVID-19 economic crisis.
Last week, Atlantis announced its plan to reopen in December, with Bruce Flatt, the chief executive officer of Brookfield Asset Management, which owns Atlantis, confirming that the property is preparing to welcome its first guests on December 1, operating the resort in a “bubble”.
Baha Mar, like most other hotels and resorts, suspended all operations in March as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe and cases were confirmed in The Bahamas.
The resort indicated in June that although tourism would resume on July 1, it would push its reopening to October when resort executives anticipated that the virus would have been contained.
However, rising cases in The Bahamas and key US markets forced another delay.
The tourism sector opened fully on November 1 with new travel protocols for visitors and returning residents, which requires them to produce a negative RT-PCR test upon arrival and to be tested five days after.
