Nassau RC stages first scholastic regatta

The Nassau Rowing Club has realized a dream of bringing together rowers from across the island of New Providence to compete in a scholastic regatta. A number of schools took part.

For the first time since its inception, the Nassau Rowing Club (RC) has realized a dream of bringing together rowers from across the island of New Providence to compete in a scholastic regatta.

Student-athletes represented their schools including Lyford Cay International School (LCIS), Windsor at Albany, Windsor Prep, Tambearly, Genesis Academy, Nassau Christian Academy (NCA), C.R. Walker, St. Augustine’s College (SAC) and Focus Point Academy.

The race course was 1000 meters (m), and the boats classes consisted of single sculls (1x), doubles (2x) and quads (4x). According to reports, there were some very tight finishes at the regatta this past weekend.

Junior sculler Timothy Stuby, 10th-grader at LCIS, defeated Jackson Mamock, fellow 10th-grader at LCIS, by just one second.

Jermaine Francis, 12th-grader at C.R. Walker, commented: “I was really impressed with Valcir [teammate Valcir Santos] and I, that we were able to beat the rowers from Lyford Cay in our doubles race”.

Santos added: “I was so excited that I forgot to breathe properly until the end of the race, but we finished.”

Francis and Santos finished second to a composite Nassau RC boat of Kenneth Hart from NCA and Kameron Taylor, a student at Focus Point Academy.

Coach KariAnne Kulig said: “This was the first race for some of the Novice rowers. Our more experienced rowers have had a chance to compete off-island, but this is a way for everyone to experience a competition without having to spend a ton of money traveling to the United States.”

Parents from all schools volunteered at the event.

Kulig said as their fleet of boats continues to grow, they will be able to host larger regattas with local and visiting teams. Nassau RC looks forward to making the scholastic regatta an annual event.

The next youth and adult learn-to-row programs start in April. Interested persons are asked to please contact the Nassau Rowing Club for more information.
