Bahamian collegiate tennis athletes hit the courts

Joshua Turnquest, Abigail Simms and Sierra Donaldson were on the court for their respective schools in collegiate tennis action on Saturday.

Turnquest played for his Asbury University Eagles as they went up against the Thomas More University Saints in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

This was the first regular season action on the court for Turnquest and the Eagles.

In singles, Turnquest took down Gavin Dail. He prevailed in a third-set tiebreak, 5-7, 7-6 and 1-0(7).

Playing in the number one doubles match, Turnquest and partner Felipe Penuela, won in a tiebreaker. They took down Dail and Jared Haught, 7-6(5).

Overall, the Eagles men’s team had a perfect 7-0 win-loss record on Saturday, starting their 2020 season on the right foot.

Next up on the Eagles’ calendar will be a home match-up against Grace College on Wednesday.

Simms and the Indiana Institute of Technology Warriors defeated the Aquinas College Saints in their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) match-up in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II for the season. They won 6-1 in that match-up inside the MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Simms fell in her number one singles match against Joska Volder. She lost, 6-2, 1-6 and 6-1.

In doubles action, Simms and her partner Carolina Fabbri fell 6-4 to Volder and Sofia Gomez, but the Warriors took the doubles points with a pair of victories to go up 1-0. Martina Borges and Elena Tokic won 6-3 over Darci TerHaar and Vanessa Heylmun at second flight and Vero Jimenez and Dominique Michelet won 6-0 over Bailey Chouinard and Kiara Berry at third flight to give the Warriors who took the doubles points.

The Warriors will play Bowling Green State University on Friday at the Perrysburg Tennis Center in Perrysburg, Ohio.

Donaldson and the Lee University Flames fell 4-3 to the University of West Alabama Tigers in the NCAA Division II.

Donaldson fell 6-3 and 7-5 to Hardija Vidnere in her singles match.

In her doubles match, Donaldson and her teammate Lauren Trammell fell 6-2 to Daryna Hukasian and Valeria Arevalo.

Prior to that, Donaldson and the Flames fell 4-3 to Lincoln Memorial University on Thursday February 27.

Donaldson fell in singles in straight sets, 7-2 and 7-6, to Amanda Dahlstrom.

In doubles, she and teammate Trammell fell to Samantha Hogan and Kristin Vogel, 6-2.

Donaldson and the Flames return to action on Thursday against Young Harris College in home match-up.

Bahamian Afrika Smith was in action earlier in the week.

Smith stepped on the court for the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats on Tuesday February 25. They fell 7-0 to the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies in NCAA Division I action.

Smith played in number one singles match but lost in two sets, 6-0 and 6-1.

In doubles action, Smith and her partner Zeniece Hall fell 6-2 to Victoria Kurz and Ava Thielman.

The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday against Southern University.
