A man who admitted to violating the nationwide curfew imposed to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus was given an absolute discharge on Monday.
The curfew, that took effect on March 20, requires residents to be at home or within the confines of their yard between the hours of 9 p.m and 5 a.m.
Under the emergency orders, curfew violators face fines up to $10,000 or up to 18 months in prison.
Police arrested Daavan Curry, 25, of Pine Yard Road, near Zion Baptist Church on Yamacraw Road around 9:45 pm on Friday.
Curry pleaded guilty to violating the curfew at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.
Curry’s lawyer, Ian Cargill, told the court that Curry was taking medicine to his diabetic mother.
Cargill said, “In those circumstances, I don’t know what I’d do.”
Forbes said that police had given a number for people to get authorization to break the curfew in emergencies.
Forbes did not convict Curry and gave him an absolute discharge, which allowed him to keep a clean record.
However, Forbes reminded him, “The rationale of having a curfew is for the greater good of everyone.”
In Freeport, three men were convicted of breaking the curfew. They received varying sentences and appeared before different magistrates.
Carl Johnson, 31, was sentenced to one year in prison. Adam Outten, 22, was fined $500; and James Toussaint, 34, was fined $1,000 or three months in prison.
