Minister of National Security Marvin Dames said hundreds of police officers have been mobilized and deployed to enforce a 24-hour curfew which came into effect yesterday.
“As you can see, you’ve been around the streets and you see them, they’re all over this island in key positions,” Dames told The Nassau Guardian.
He added, “We have to our adjust our resources to kind of meet the changes (of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic).
“So, it’s not like we’re going out there taking on persons who are armed and out to cause harm physically to others.
“What this is all about is getting Bahamians to understand that this is serious Bahamians and we all have a role to play, and it shouldn’t have to take the police to go to a beach where you have a dray load of persons not practicing social distance…”
Asked if the government had enough resources to enforce the curfew, the minister replied, “Of course, why not? You see it happening. The police and the defense force are doing a tremendous job.”
Individuals who violate the curfew, which was imposed in attempts to contain the spread of COVID-19 locally, are liable to fines not exceeding $10,000 or terms of imprisonment not exceeding 18 months or to both.
Police said yesterday that nine men on Abaco appeared before the Magistrate’s Court where they were charged with violating curfew.
Their ages range from 27 to 61.
They all pleaded guilty and were fined $1,500, which must be paid by March 27, or three months in prison, according to police.
