A magistrate on Thursday ordered a psychiatric evaluation of a man accused of murdering his 58-year-old father.
Prosecutors say Selwyn Seymour, 24, killed Dwight Ricardo Seymour on March 23 at the home that they shared at Beaumontia Avenue in Gardens Hills.
Police arrested Seymour after the body was discovered.
Seymour was not required to plead to the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.
According to defense lawyer Ian Cargill, Seymour has a history of mental illness and he asked the court to order mental tests.
The magistrate said that Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre had placed a moratorium on inmates.
However, she ordered that doctors conduct the evaluation as “soon as reasonably practicable”.
Cargill said that the evaluation needed to take place before Seymour’s arraignment in the Supreme Court.
Prosecutors plan to fast-track the case to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on May 27.
Seymour has been remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
