Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands said yesterday that 138 people have been tested for COVID-19 in The Bahamas so far.
His comments came one day after Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pearl McMillian noted that 117 people had been tested.
Asked if this meant that 21 individuals had been tested overnight, Sands replied, “[I] can’t say authoritatively.”
According to the Ministry of Health, there are four people currently in quarantine locally. Thirty-eight people have been released from quarantine.
There have been four confirmed cases of the virus in The Bahamas.
The government has taken several steps toward containing the virus locally.
It has implemented a policy encouraging social distancing, imposed a national curfew and declared a state of emergency in the days following the first confirmed case.
Asked by Darold Miller, while on his ZNS show “Darold Miller Live” whether these measures are an overreaction by the government, Sands replied, “That’s a good question and it’s an important question and I look at you and I say with every fiber of my education, every fiber of morality, every fiber of my heart, that we are not overreacting. We believe that this will save lives.”
He added, “This is a public health threat that has come at us and it is a deadly threat. And while it is a nuisance, while it is aggravating, while it’s pissing us off, we need to understand that if we don’t stay three to six feet apart, some of us could end up six feet under the ground.”
