Kerzner had an uncompromising determination

The death of Sol Kerzner serves to remind us yet again of those persons who throughout our modern history have made historically defining contributions to The Bahamas. Sol Kerzner was undoubtedly one such person.

Sol Kerzner was the leader in the renaissance which took place in Bahamian tourism at a time when the industry was facing significant challenges throughout the region. He established the largest and most state-of-the-art mega resort in the region and elevated it to a level of competition with destinations like Orlando and Las Vegas.

The “Atlantis” brand name he established in The Bahamas was one of a kind in this part of the world, catering to age groups across the whole spectrum.

Over two decades [ago], he completed multiple phases of the project to appeal to traditional tourists and millennials alike. The third and largest phase was done under my administration. It was during this period that I become even more impressed by Sol Kerzner‘s uncompromising determination to make Atlantis and The Bahamas as good a destination as any in the world.

Throughout it all, Kerzner vigorously promoted the training of Bahamians, especially through Atlantis’ own training institute known as Atlantis University.

Notably, when he established a leading resort in Dubai, opportunities were provided for Bahamians to participate at management levels there as well.

Sol Kerzner’s contribution was not, however, limited to the resort business.

He was actively engaged in making a significant contribution to social, cultural, and environmental causes. And he was, moreover, a dedicated philanthropist, showering his favor on many a Bahamian charity and worthy social causes.

I will always remember him as undoubtedly the dominant private sector investor in Bahamian tourism during the period of his ownership of Atlantis.

Indeed it was because of his spectacular success that other major investors were attracted to invest in The Bahamas.

On my behalf and on behalf of my wife, Bernadette, I express our profound gratitude for the enduring contribution of Sol Kerzner and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his children and entire family.
