Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said while it is unfortunate that some Bahamians are unable to return home due to a decision to shut down the borders, the measure was essential given the number of COVID-19 “hotspots” near The Bahamas.
“There are hotspots outside of our territorial boundaries,” Minnis said in the House of Assembly today.
“And it was essential to close our airports so that we could minimize the importation of COVID-19 and subsequently a spread throughout our society.
“It’s unfortunate that there are Bahamians who are presently outside and because the airport is closed they cannot return,” he continued.
“However, Mr. Speaker, decisions are made in the best interest of the country and every country has done similar things, most I should say. And in fact in the Caribbean, they fall in a similar situation where citizens may be caught outside. However, those who are caught outside, I would advise that they follow the recommendations and directives given by the various government, whichever territorial borders they are in.
There are 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas.
On Friday, the government decided to shut down borders for all incoming people, including Bahamian residents and citizens, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the United States.
