Seven people were injured yesterday in a two-vehicle crash involving the police bus used to transport prisoners from court.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Marathon Road and Robinson Road.
Chief Superintendent Craig Stubbs said initial investigations showed the crash took place as the police bus headed west on Robinson Road. At the same time, an unidentified civilian was traveling north from the East West Highway onto Marathon Road, Stubbs said.
The force of the crash caused the prison bus to flip onto its side, leaving the five officers onboard with non-life-threatening injuries, Stubbs said.
The male driver and his female passenger were hurt in the collision, Stubbs said.
All of the injured were transported to hospital by ambulance.
Stubbs said that police had interviewed passersby and other drivers to determine what happened. He also said investigators hoped that CCTV footage could assist them.
The officers had already dropped the prisoners back to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services when the accident occurred.
Stubbs was unable to say whether the police vehicle had on its siren at the time.
However, he urged all drivers to yield to emergency vehicles whenever they engage their sirens.
