Tyrhonda Glinton, along with four Bahamian girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – Shabrea Davis, Paige Rahming, Olga Roussos and Tyler Knowles – recently participated in the 5th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly panel discussion at the United Nations (UN), New York.
The girls selected to make the UN trip were honorees during the first STEM GEM Honoree Awards for high school girls who break stereotypes in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.
Davis is a 12th-grade honor roll student and head girl at C.V. Bethel High School; Roussos, a 14-year-old homeschooled Grand Bahamian.
Knowles, a bio-chemistry student at the University of The Bahamas (UB), and Rahming, an engineering major at UB, were first and second place winners of the Department of Gender and Family Affairs 2019 Girls in STEM Video Competition.
At the UN, the discussion focused on the inter-linkages between gender inequality, specifically in science – digital and tech revolution, and the agricultural sector for sustainable development. The girls in science’s participation in the main panel allowed their voices to be more pronounced internationally, and heard by policy-makers and decision-makers from around the world.
Roussos presented on agricultural science and technology and how Bahamian female farmers can incorporate technology for sustainable farming.
FEM STEM Bahamas founder Glinton presented on the importance of STEM and STEM programs in The Bahamas.
FEM STEM is a newly-established non-profit organization whose mission is to equip, empower and educate girls to explore the opportunities in STEM.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly brings together stakeholders from high-level government officials, representatives of international organizations, foundations, private sector, civil society as well as women and girls in science from around the world.
Recognizing the interplay and interdependence between science, technology and the digital economy for inclusive and green economic growth, panels delivered evidence-based green and inclusive solutions that meet the needs of countries in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
