Construction of the new Nassau cruise port officially began yesterday with the driving of guide piles into the seabed, which heralds the reconstruction of one of the dock’s oldest berths.
During a tour of the facility with members of the media, Nassau Cruise Port Limited’s (NCP) Director of Projects and Facilities Lionel Turnquest explained that with the razing of the Festival Place building and old Customs warehouse complete and with the start of the piling operations, the cruise port redevelopment project’s progress is “in its early stage”.
“We are moving expeditiously,” said Turnquest. “We have procured all of our piles for all the marine works and all the tiebacks, et cetera for them. Orders have been placed for the remainder of the pier furniture, including bollards, fenders and the like, which will be arriving early next year. So everything is in motion as we continue to press.
“Over the coming months the pace of the work will increase as we introduce more equipment and more teams.”
Turnquest said NCP hopes to have three piling teams at the height of the pier construction. He said construction of the pier extension to the east is expected to begin in two to three weeks.
Yesterday the piling operation began with the use of a vibratory hammer to put the pile guides into the seabed.
Turnquest said when the sheet piles begin to be driven 80 feet into the seabed, the construction will become very noisy for those in the vicinity of the port. He said businesses downtown could even feel some vibration, depending on the density of the rock the piles encounter on the way down.
According to Turnquest, the Port Department building, the last of the buildings remaining on the site, will be torn down in early January, with demolition completed by the second week of February.
