Two men found roaming the streets during a five-day lockdown were each fined $500 Thursday.
Police arrested Javan Pierre and Darren Hewland while walking on Graham Drive in Yellow Elders Gardens around 8:30 p.m. on April 12.
They both admitted to violation of lockdown at their arraignment before Magistrate Sandradee Gardiner.
According to the prosecution, the men told investigators they were going to buy cigarettes.
However, Pierre disputed this in court.
Pierre claimed he was really going to get water from the shop.
But Gardiner said that no stores were open.
She said, “If you had money to buy items then it means you had money to buy the items before the lockdown.”
For his part, Hewland admitted that he was going to buy Backwoods cigarettes.
Gardiner said, “You could be fined up to $10,000. I don’t know if a smoke is worth that much.”
Hewland agreed.
The men have until April 24 to pay the money to avoid spending two months in prison.
