Two of Bahamas Power and Light’s (BPL) new Wartsila engines tripped offline yesterday morning, leading to power outages across New Providence.
“[BPL] wishes to report that two Wartsila engines tripped offline at Station A in addition to the GT9 at Blue Hills Power Station,” the company said in a statement addressing the matter.
“This resulted in a number of outages throughout the island of New Providence. Power has since been restored to a number of areas throughout the island of New Providence.
“Power has since been restored to a number of areas while technicians work to restore power to the remaining affected areas.”
Affected areas include Westridge, Sandyport, Delaporte, East Street, Blue Hill Road, Joan’s Heights, Doresetteville, South Beach, Golden Gates and Sea Breeze, among other areas.
Last year, residents across New Providence suffered months of frequent load shedding exercises due to a generation shortage on the island.
BPL touted the installation of seven new Wartsila engines at its Clifton Pier Power Station A electricity plant as a cure for the issue.
The engines were brought online in December.
Since then, the power company has also added an engine at its Blue Hills Power Station, which BPL Chairman Dr. Donovan Moxey said will further address the generation shortage.
