A 19-year-old Long Island resident was charged today with the murders of Jane Harding and Melissa Hui.

Nathan Harding was also charged with two counts of rape during his initial appearance before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

The bodies of  Hui, 34, and her mother, Jane Harding, 62, were unearthed on Friday on a beach in Salt Pond, Long Island.

Nathan Harding was not required to enter a plea during his arraignment.

His attorney, Bjorn Ferguson, said that his client had attempted to hurt himself while in custody.

Ferguson said he would make an application for Harding to be remanded to Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre. However, Ferguson-Pratt said due to the nature of the charges, he would be remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

She said she would make a note for him to be seen by a psychiatrist.

The matter was adjourned to May 21, when Harding will be served with a voluntary bill of indictment.
