The pennant-winning and defending champions on the women’s side, the Central Gas Panthers, took down the Johnson’s Lady Truckers in four sets to punch their ticket to the New Providence Volleyball Association (NPVA) Championships. They finished off the Lady Truckers in a two-game sweep, two games to none.
Earlier on Friday night, the pennant-winning Warhawks on the men’s side secured a spot in the NPVA Championships after taking down the Technicians in four sets, finishing that playoff series in a two-game sweep as well.
In the other men’s playoff series, the defending champions Tour Daddy Defenders swept the National Fence Intruders two games to none, finishing off that series on Sunday afternoon. They won game two, 25-19, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-21. In the other women’s playoff series the Lady Warhawks turned back the Scottsdale Vixens denying them a 16th straight trip to the NPVA Championships. The Lady Warhawks won in straight sets on Sunday, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-16, ending that series two games to none. The Vixens had won 14 straight NPVA titles before the Panthers dethroned them last year.
Panthers over the Lady Truckers
Other than the Panthers dropping the second set, it was a dominating performance by them as they outscored the Lady Truckers 95-68 on the night.
The Panthers had four players who scored in double figures. Latavia Braynen finished with a game-high 13 points. Finishing with 12 points each were Philicia Johnson-Taylor and Jenae Saunders. Rachel Knowles chipped in with 11 points.
Johnson-Taylor scored a game-high 10 points from kills. Brennen and Saunders scored nine and eight points on kills respectively.
It was a dominating first set for the Panthers as they won convincingly 25-12. They prevailed in four sets, 25-12, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-14.
The second set saw the Lady Truckers power their way to a 25-20 victory. Kelsie Johnson scored five points in that set for the Lady Truckers. She finished with a team-high 10 points – seven from kills.
Tia Charlow and Davia Moss finished with nine and five points respectively in the loss.
In the third set, the Panthers roared back to take that set, 25-17, to take a 2-1 lead.
Looking to win the fourth set to end the match and prepare for the championship series, the Panthers came out aggressively and dominated throughout. They won that set, 25-14, to win to match three sets to one.
Warhawks over the Technicians
The Warhawks missed an opportunity to shut the door on the Technicians in the third set, but they got the job done in the fourth set to win the match three sets to one.
Donovan Wilmott led all scorers in the game with 15 points in the win. He finished the game with 10 points from kills.
The Warhawks had two other players who scored in double-digits. Renaldo Knowles and Tyrone Sands Jr. scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
The first set was a close one as the Technicians came close to the Warhawks. In the end, the Warhawks held on to win that set 25-22. They went on to take the match, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-14.
After winning the first set, the Warhawks went on to win the second set 25-23 to take a commanding two sets to none lead in the match.
The third set saw the Technicians on a mission. They survived to force a fourth set as they won 25-22.
In that set, Othman Brown scored seven points for the Technicians. He scored 12 points in the entire game which included eight points from kills.
Ashton Ferguson also scored 12 points for the Technicians. Michael Bodie finished with seven points in the loss.
After the Technicians won the third set, the Warhawks showed why they are the pennant winners as they rose to the occasion to dominate the fourth set 25-14 to advance to the championship round.
