The verdict is in. Carnival has officially been postponed.
This news hit Karnivalistas where it hurt, but we are convinced the decision is in the best interest of us all.
COVID-19 has proven to be very dangerous, especially to those with pre-existing conditions. And with over 215,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 144 countries, and over 8,700 deaths, we don’t want to take the chance that people will import more cases to The Bahamas.
We have enough to deal with already. So far, three people have tested positive for the virus locally. However, more positive tests are expected in the coming weeks, health officials have warned.
During this time when social distancing is the order of the day, Karnivalistas should use this opportunity to boost their immune systems – work out (preferably in a safe space), up your water intake, take vitamins, eat more fruits and vegetables.
These measures will also help you to go the distance when carnival is finally hosted here in The Bahamas.
All projections lead us to conclude that carnival will be delayed for at least two to three months. This is just our projection. The organizers of carnival will provide an official update as the impact of COVID-19 becomes clearer.
Jamaica’s carnival, which was scheduled to take place in April, has been postponed until October. Some carnival bands are assisting clients who want to sell their costumes.
We expect that Bahamian bands will do something similar once the new date is announced.
Karnivalista will keep you updated on all things carnival as we navigate through this health crisis.
Next week, we will speak to band owners to find out how they’re coping.
For now, stay safe and wash those hands.
