Cooper tells PM ‘call election now’

Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Deputy Leader Chester Cooper blasted Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis on Saturday, claiming he does not have a plan for North Andros development and urged him to call an election now “if [he] is so convinced he can carry every seat in the next election”.

Cooper’s challenge to Minnis came at a PLP meeting in Andros during which he outlined “the PLP vision” for development of the island.

“If you believe you command the support of the people after raising their VAT (value-added tax), after failing them on jobs, after neglecting the Family Islands, after continually insulting and embarrassing the Bahamian people on the international stage, after failing Abaco and Grand Bahama after Dorian, then call the election now,” Cooper said.

“Call the election this summer and let’s see if the people still have confidence in you.”

He added, “If, after giving Brent Symonette the Town Center Mall contract…and after sinking $100 million into the Grand Lucayan hotel on Grand Bahama, he believes the people support him, then call the election now.

“We don’t have to wait any longer, we can figure this thing out this summer.”

Cooper also referenced comments made by Minnis during a Free National Movement (FNM) community meeting on Tuesday night.

Minnis told the crowd that the FNM has an easy task in the next election — predicting the results will be 39 FNM seats and zero PLP seats.

Firing at that, Cooper said: “I heard the people in the crowd, the few who showed up, were embarrassed for him.

“If the prime minister is so convinced he can carry every seat in the next election then what is he waiting for? He should call the election now.”

On January 22 at an event that was billed as a town hall meeting but quickly took the shape of a political rally, Minnis launched his re-election bid touting his record in office, lashing critics and declaring that the victory.
