Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Deputy Leader Chester Cooper has said with proper planning for investments and incentives to spur it into a freight hub, North Andros could benefit from the global multibillion-dollar shipping freight industry.
Speaking at a North Andros branch meeting this weekend, Cooper said the potential of Andros is limitless, yet it remains untapped.
“Morgan’s Bluff is a critical resource that the government must develop and take the lead on,” he said.
“With proper planning for investments and incentives to spur them, a freight hub and a robust city could easily be developed around the bluff. Jamaica is getting heavily into the transshipment business. You are ideally positioned with a deep water harbor to compete head on in this space.
“We talk a lot about collecting fees for our airspace, but we must also examine whether we are collecting sufficient revenues from our shipping lanes, well positioned off the coast of the United States.”
Cooper said since most cities are built around universities, ports, shipping, political capitals, agriculture and commerce centers, North Andros has the potential to transform not just its own economy, but the economy of the entire Bahamas.
“I am told that there are certain families in Nassau who believe God gave them the right to the economy of The Bahamas, who want to get their hands on your Morgan’s Bluff port. We cannot let that happen,” Cooper said.
“Whoever owns the port at Morgan’s Bluff will control the economy of North Andros.
But we can steer the economy for the benefit of all.”
