Playing in the number three singles match for the Missouri Valley College Vikings, Bahamian collegiate tennis player Lauryn Daxon defeated Karson Light of Milligan College 6-1 and 6-2 during spring break in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Monday.
With the win, Daxon, a junior, and the Vikings improved to a 5-1 win-loss record on the season. They went on to defeat Lawrence Technological University on Tuesday, and improved to 6-1.
Meanwhile, Joshua Turnquest and the Asbury University Eagles won over Olivet Nazarene, 4-3, on the Asbury Tennis Courts in Wilmore, Kentucky. Bouncing back from a number one singles loss, 6-4 and 6-2, to Francisco Faria, Turnquest, a junior, teamed up with Felipe Penuela for the number one doubles match, and the duo were victorious over Faria and Alex Verdu, 6-3.
Turnquest and the Eagles went on to play Southwestern College at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on Tuesday and fell, 4-3. They dropped to 3-2 on the season.
Turnquest won his number one singles match, defeating David Moral Tebar, 6-3 and 6-2. However, he and doubles partner Penuela fell to Sheldon Hawthorne and Ryan Fung in a close match, 7-6(5).
Sierra Donaldson and the Lee University Flames won 5-2 over Tarelton State on Monday afternoon. They also won over the University of Mary, 7-0, and Winona State University, 6-1, on Tuesday.
Against Tarelton State in Orlando, Florida, Donaldson, a sophomore, played the number four singles match and won in a thriller in a three-setter over Faustine Palatte, 2-6, 6-4 and 11-9. Donaldson then teamed up with Lauren Trammell and they breezed past Delfina Rodriguez and Aubry Hutson, 6-1. With the three victories on Monday and Tuesday, the team improved to 3-5 on the season.
Against the University of Mary, playing in the number four singles match, Donaldson shut out Heidi Jacobson, 6-0 and 6-0. In doubles, she and Trammell won easily over Kelsey Lajom and Kali Askvig, 6-2.
Against Winona State, Donaldson and the Flames continued a fantastic spring break trip for them, winning easily. In the number four singles match, Donaldson won over Rachel Kelly in three sets, 6-4, 2-6 and 10-7. In doubles, Donaldson and Trammell won easily over Tayla Card and Rina Niehoff, 6-1.
The Lady Flames are now 6-5 on the year and will take two days off before wrapping up the week on Friday against Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Abigail Simms and Indiana Tech suffered a tough 7-0 loss to the top-ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Georgia Gwinnett College. The Indiana Tech Warriors dropped to 7-4 on the season. Simms, a freshman, lost her number one singles match to Maria Genovese, 6-0 and 6-0. She and doubles partner Carolina Fabbri fell to Selina Pichler and Tereza Koplova, 6-0.
