Former Minister of Health Renward Wells yesterday called on the government to outline its plans to combat an inevitable fourth wave as the rest of the world grapples with the new omicron variant.
“As I said, the former administration, we had put in place our plans, our programs, our processes that delivered results,” Wells said.
“They need to say what their plans, their processes are. They are now in the chair and the proof of the pudding is going to be in the eating as we see what the results are now that we are on the verge of this omicron variant.
“But we really don’t want to see the fourth wave become a problem in the country because, at the end of the day, it affects our lives and our livelihoods so we’re hoping for the best.”
Wells said the Free National Movement does not know what the government is doing to prepare for another wave “other than relaxing measures”.
He said the Davis administration has not come with “a concerted plan even though before they said that they had a plan”.
Wells said it appears that the government is simply following the plans left in place by the previous administration.
“They’re not getting the same results because they’re not as aggressive with ensuring that those things are carried out to the degree that they ought to be,” he said.
After weeks of low numbers, 117 new cases were recorded from Thursday to Saturday alone.
The test positivity rate on Saturday was 7.9 percent. Friday’s rate was 9.8 percent and Thursday’s was 6.1 percent, all higher than the five percent maximum recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), but still lower than the rates seen during the third wave, which regularly topped 20 percent.
In the last week, 207 new cases have been confirmed.
Seventy-one cases were reported the week before.
As of Saturday, there were 509 active cases in the country.
Hospitalizations have also increased noticeably, particularly on Grand Bahama.
As of Saturday, 23 people were hospitalized in the country. Of them, 12 were on Grand Bahama and 11 on New Providence.
