The Digital Transformation Unit (DTU) revealed in a press statement yesterday that the Mygateway platform, which was developed by a Bahamian software development team, has processed $19 million in duty exemptions and has a user base of 54,000 people in 25 countries, just one year after launching.
The platform was designed with ease of business in mind and made it easy for users of government services to interact with government departments by bringing those services online.
The DTU is a unit of the Department of Digitization and Transformation in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and is part of a five-year, multimillion-dollar digital transformation initiative, the statement noted.
“The launch of MyGateway.gov.bs made it possible for users to access and pay through the digipay application for 35 government services in 11 agencies on a centralized, safe and secure platform,” the statement pointed out.
The DTU explained that the development team hopes to bring 200 government services to the MyGateway platform by 2025. The government hopes the work of the DTU will improve the country’s ease of doing business ranking, which this government hopes to have skyrocket to the top 50 rankings in the world. The Bahamas’ ranking on the World Bank’s 2020 Ease of Doing Business Index currently sits at 119 out of 190 countries.
“The accomplishments of the DTU over the past year have gained regional awareness, resulting in recognition for the country and its groundbreaking digital transformation efforts,” the statement noted.
“The DTU created the foundation for robust and secure national digital transformation by drafting legislation for e-government. Through a partnership with the International Telecommunication Union – the IT arm of the United Nations – the country’s inaugural National Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (CIRT) was implemented, a national CIRT manager was engaged and the second of three drafts of the country’s first National Cybersecurity Strategy was completed.
“The development of a national electronic identification system began and the DTU commenced discussions with the Royal Bahamas Police Force regarding enhancements to the cyberforensics lab.”
The Bahamas has made huge strides in digitization, especially in the banking sector through the launch of the world’s first digital fiat currency, the Sand Dollar.
