A magistrate yesterday issued an arrest warrant for a man who admitted to beating up the mother of his child after he failed to appear for sentencing.
Anthony Louis, 38, of Claridge Road, entered a guilty plea to a charge of causing harm on December 9.
The court heard how he battered the woman on September 10, 2021, sending her to hospital, after he accused her of cheating on him because she came home late.
The woman sustained a brain injury as a result of the vicious attack and now has a speech impediment.
Despite this, the woman cried as she begged Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain not to jail her former lover, whom she described as a “good father”.
Instead, she asked for a restitution payment because her medical bills were growing.
Swain had adjourned the matter to December 13 for sentencing to allow the prosecution time to determine how much of the woman’s medical bills at Doctors Hospital had been covered by insurance.
But Louis was a no-show and the magistrate issued an arrest warrant.
According to defense lawyer Milton Cox, he said Louis had contacted him and said he was sick. However, Cox did not have a sick slip to support the claim.
The victim of the assault claimed that Louis had a concert at the BCPOU Hall over the weekend.
Cox joked that he hopefully made some money to pay her compensation.
