Former Tall Pines MP Don Saunders said he intends to run for deputy chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM) when the party holds its convention in February.
“I think I bring the experience of having served in Parliament and understanding the dynamics of Parliament — both in Parliament and on the ground in the communities,” Saunders said.
“I understand the dynamics of the party itself and of being a member of the party since coming back from university in 2001. I think I’ve been on the council since then and I’m a former deputy secretary general of the party, so I’ve been a senior officer of the party before.”
Saunders said he understands the importance of assisting parliamentarians in expressing the party’s views on issues.
“I’ve been one of those very vocal members of the party,” Saunders said.
“I was one of those members of Parliament who was always willing and able to successfully articulate the party’s views and articulate even my personal views on things.
“But, as an officer of the party, obviously, my job will be to articulate the views of the party as a whole. I think I’ll be able to assist in building our associations throughout the country.”
Saunders said he will also bring new ideas to the party following its defeat at the polls in September.
He said the FNM needs to be able to think of new ways to rebuild and articulate its views to the community.
“I think the country is looking for young people like myself in my age bracket to step up in the party,” Saunders said.
“We want a good mix of men and women. We want a good mix of more senior persons, middle-aged and younger persons. I think I fit in that middle-aged professional group.”
Saunders said he will be “a very effective” senior officer of the FNM.
He said he has a good working relationship with FNM Leader Michael Pintard.
“I think that will also go well in my responsibilities and in my job as a senior officer of the party,” Saunders said.
