Bahamians perform well on collegiate circuit

It was a good weekend for Bahamian track and field athletes as they continue to perform on the outdoor track and field circuit at all collegiate levels.

Grand Bahamian Shyrone Kemp held off some tough competitors at the South Dakota Challenge, winning the men’s long jump in Greenfield, South Dakota. Kemp leapt 7.21 meters (m) – 23’ 8” – for his NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons. He held off several NCAA Division I jumpers.

With that jump, Kemp now ranks at number 25 in the NCAA Division II rankings and will look to improve on that distance and surpass the NCAA Division II provisional mark of 7.26m (23’ 9-3/4”) when he competes again. He is ranked second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in that event.

Finishing behind Kemp was South Dakota University Coyotes’ Ethan Heitman who posted a jump of 7.11m (23’ 4”). Finishing third was the Iowa Central Community College Tritons’ Eliot Cummings. He recorded a jump of 7.01m (23’).

Tre Buchanan ran a personal best time in the 400m hurdles and now has the eighth-fastest time in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). He ran 53.24 seconds at the 13th Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic, qualifying for the NJCAA Championships. The Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds freshman won that race and was the only runner to clock under 54 seconds. It was also his first victory of the season. The meet was held in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Finishing second in that race was the University of Central Missouri Mules’ Jovan Brown in 54.54 seconds. Buchanan’s teammate Keshawn Jackson was third with a time of 56.30 seconds.

Coshan Campbell was able to improve her national-best time in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) 800m event at the Masked Raider Open in Lubbock, Texas. The Wayland Baptist University Pioneer senior ran 2:12.04 to finished fourth.

Winning that event was Barton County Community College Cougars Kayan Green who clocked 2:08.72.

Bria Sands won the high jump competition at the Berry Field Day Invitational after she cleared 1.62m (5’ 3-1/4”) in Mount Berry, Georgia. The Life University senior finished ahead of Rhodes College Lynx Rachel Sullivan who also cleared 1.62m. The Berry College Vikings’ Kammann Brown cleared 1.57m (5’ 1-3/4”) for third.

In NCAA Division I action, Marissa White crossed the finish line in 55.64 seconds to finish third in the women’s 400m at the Temple Invite in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Temple University Owls junior finished behind Villanova University Wildcats’ Amari Onque-Shabazz who finished second with a time of 55.49 seconds. Winning that event was Onque-Shabazz’s teammate McKenna Keegan who clocked 54.50 seconds.

It was a third-place finish for Kyle Alcine after he cleared a height of 2.04m (6’ 8-1/4”) in the men’s high jump at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona. The Kansas State University Wildcats’ senior was unable to defeat his teammate Tejaswin Shankar who won after clearing 2.19m (7’ 2-1/4”). The University of Arizona Wildcats’ Justice Summerset placed second after jumping a height of 2.14m (7’ 0-1/4”).

These athletes along with other Bahamians will get a chance to return to action this weekend, looking to improve their performances from this past weekend.
