Allegations that Canadian fashion executive and Lyford Cay homeowner Peter Nygard forced women to have sex with him and engaged in sex trafficking are “serious and disturbing,” Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis said yesterday adding that he hopes Nygard’s alleged victims receive justice.
“The allegations against Nygard are extremely serious and disturbing and should be pursued to the full extent of the law,” Davis said in brief statement posted on his social media accounts.
“We hope the women involved receive justice.”
Davis’ statement was posted to social media as he was speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday during debate on the Fisheries Bill.
Nygard was arrested on Monday in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, by Canadian authorities after the US requested Canada issue an arrest warrant.
On Tuesday, the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York announced that Nygard was indicted on multiple counts of sex trafficking, racketeering and other crimes.
Prosecutors said the charges stem from “a decades-long pattern of criminal conduct involving at least dozens of victims in the United States, The Bahamas, and Canada, among other locations”. Some of the alleged victims were minors.
For 25 years, Nygard, 79, used the “Nygard Group’s influence, as well as its employees, funds, and other resources to recruit and maintain adult and minor-aged female victims for Nygard’s sexual gratification and the sexual gratification of his friends and business associates,” prosecutors said.
Hours after the indictment was made public, the Free National Movement called on the PLP to speak up on Nygard, who they said was a “top PLP donor”.
Former Minister of Labour Shane Gibson told The Tribune in April 2017 that Nygard donated roughly $94,000 to his 2012 election campaign and for various initiatives in his constituency.
The PLP later responded, claiming Nygard donated to the FNM as well.
