Residents can get Pfizer shot as early as Monday

The phased roll-out of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will begin as early as Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced this morning shortly after 128,700 vaccine doses landed at Jet Nassau on New Providence.

The shipment of vaccines, a donation from the US government, is the first tranche of 397,000 doses of Pfizer promised to The Bahamas.

The prime minister said details of the rollout will be made public in the coming days.

“The Bahamas now has the vaccines to meet demands that exist,” Minnis said.

“What we need now is Bahamians to come forward quickly to take the vaccine.”

“We need Bahamians to get vaccinated as soon as possible to save lives in the country.  I say to the Bahamian people, you do not have any time to wait any longer.

“You do not have time to keep thinking about it. The hospitals are full to their limit.

“Sadly, some of our people are dying. Taking the shot will save your life. Not taking them can cost you your life.

“By coming forward quickly, we can save lives, end the emergency phase of the pandemic, restore our economy and jobs and have more openness.”

The prime minister also made a plea for volunteers to come forward to help with the administration of the vaccines.

“We need volunteers from throughout The Bahamas and all sectors, retired physicians, retired nurses, retired police, customs officers, union members, lodges, all Bahamians.

“This is not a political matter this is in the best interest of The Bahamas. We are here to save lives…

“At this moment, you can do something for your country. You can step forward, volunteer so that we can vaccinate as many individuals as quickly as possible.”

Minnis said the infrastructure required for the Pfizer vaccine has been met on New Providence and Grand Bahama.

The vaccine will be available to adults and children (ages 12-17), with the consent of their parents or guardian.
