The Bahamas Parliament has been dissolved.
Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle, acting in his capacity as provost marshal, read a proclamation from Governor General C.A. Smith on the steps of the House of Assembly dissolving Parliament at 10 a.m. today.
Rolle also read a proclamation revealing the next session of Parliament will start on October 6.
The dissolution supersedes the prorogation which took place yesterday
Dissolution means all seats in Parliament are now vacant.
A letter, purportedly from Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis addressed to the governor general, indicating that Parliament will be dissolved today and that an election will be held on September 16, was widely circulated on social media this morning.
Minnis will make a national address at 11 a.m., at which time he is expected to announce the election date.
