Bidding process for Bahamas airports begins next month

The Department of Aviation is on target to begin its three-stage bidding process this quarter, with Director of Aviation Algernon Cargill telling Guardian Business yesterday that the call for bids for the redevelopment of some of the country’s airports is expected to begin sometime next month.

When the request for quotes process begins, private sector companies will be able to bid on airports set out in two bundles. Bundle one relates to the redevelopment of Grand Bahama International Airport, while bundle two includes the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, Exuma International Airport, North Eleuthera Airport, Deadman’s Cay Airport, Great Harbour Cay Airport and San Salvador Airport.

Cargill said the road to the opening of bids had been a “detailed process”, one that has been guided with the help of the government’s airport project consultant James Lew of global management consulting firm LeighFisher.

He said in June during an aviation sector briefing on the bundles that the government could sign contracts with winning bidders by the first quarter of 2022. More than 171 people from across the world attended that June briefing, where it was explained to them that the airports in both bundles welcomed 1.26 million passengers in 2018, with 820,000 people moving through Grand Bahama’s airport alone. Both bundles will be operated under a long-term concession agreement with the winning bidders.

Cargill said the government is now working on a similar package for Cat Island’s airport, which is not included in the bundles that will go out to bid next month.

“We will be doing an initiative for the airport in Cat Island, which was not on the agenda before, that’s been added,” said Cargill. “It’s a separate process.”
