Well over 50 percent of our adult population have lost one or more teeth. As a result, traditional dental implants are used to replace one single tooth or several teeth. Dental implants are also used to hold removable dentures in place. They are inserted into the jaw bone and eventually fuse with a bone, a process called osseointegration.
Mini dental implants are smaller titanium implants and are fast becoming a great alternative to conventional implants. Mini implants are popular for four main reasons:
• Cost much less.
• They can be used where there is limited jaw bone.
• They can be used to stabilize and secure your existing dentures; and
• They can be used immediately after placement.
In this column, I address the benefits of mini dental implants, which have the same structure as regular implants, but they are smaller. Unlike conventional implants, they’re comprised of a one-piece base that’s less than three millimeters in diameter.
One significant benefit of mini dental implants is after placement, you can use them immediately. They are connected to your existing denture making them more stable and secure. Also, they are much less expensive than traditional dental implants. Mini implant placement does not require stitches. The implants are placed and patients can instantly experience its benefit in one visit.
Mini dental implants are placed through less-invasive techniques than conventional dental implants. These narrow implants protrude above the gum surface when placed into the bone, while conventional implants are placed under the gums.
Stabilizing your denture with mini implants has many benefits – enjoying your favorite foods, pronouncing certain words, limited denture slippage and less sore spots on your gums. This is really appreciated by patients.
Mini dental implants need the same care as your natural teeth. If you have mini dental implants, brush your teeth twice daily, floss once a day and make sure to visit your dentist regularly. If plaque and tartar build up, your dentist may recommend that you increase your frequency of visits and use fluoride in your toothpaste or a special rinse.
Mini implants are placed with confidence by many experienced periodontists, today. Well over one million mini implants have been placed in the United States and are quickly becoming the preferred treatment choice for many dentists and patients. In many practices, patients’ lives are changed because of this unique cost effective alternative.
Mini implants can assist with a denture makeover while regaining your confidence with secure teeth once again. They are less expensive and less time-consuming to place than the conventional implants.
When finding a solution to replace your missing teeth, your dentist will advise if mini dental implants are the best choice for you. Talk to them about it. It can bring you closer to your happier, healthier smile.
