‘Jazz’ leaves game with left shoulder injury

Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr., the electrifying infielder for the Miami Marlins, appears to be headed to the injured list.

Chisholm injured his left shoulder diving for a ball in shallow right field in the bottom of the first inning in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, and came up grimacing in obvious pain. He was taken out of the game, and up to press time, it was undetermined if any structural damage had been done.

On the play, Chisholm tried to chase down a shallow fly ball off the bat of Bryce Harper and dove for the ball after sprinting from his second baseman position, but it sailed out of his reach. Chisholm stayed on the ground for about 30 seconds, before walking off clutching his left arm. Had he caught the ball, it would have been his second-highlight reel catch of the series, as he made a leaping catch off a line drive by Andrew McCutchen on Saturday.

Chisholm struggled at the plate in the four-game series, going just 1-for-10, but he managed to draw three walks and scored three times. He struck out just once, and with his walk on Sunday, has now reached base safely in 11 consecutive games.

The Phillies won the series three games to one, winning in the first game of a double-header on Friday, winning the scheduled Saturday game that was completed on Sunday, and finishing off the series with a 7-4 win yesterday. The games were played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Marlins remain at the cellar of the National League East Division of Major League Baseball (MLB) with a 40-53 win/loss record, nine and a half games behind the first-place New York Mets (48-42).

According to initial reports, Chisholm suffered a left shoulder contusion, and is day to day. Magneuris Sierra entered the game and played left field for the Marlins. Joe Panik moved over from third base to second, and Jon Berti moved to third base from left field.

Chisholm walked in his only appearance in the weekend finale, and is batting .251 with 11 home runs, 34 RBIs (runs batted in) and 38 runs scored in 70 games this season – most of his damage coming from the leadoff position. He has a .315 on-base percentage, a .437 slugging percentage and a .755 on base-plus slugging percentage. He has 11 stolen bases and remains a legitimate 20-20 prospect in his first full season in the majors.

Defensively, Chisholm has 172 assists, 86 putouts and 15 errors on the season. He has a .953 fielding percentage at second base and a .928 fielding percentage at shortstop. He has been a part of 44 double plays.

Chisholm, 23, has emerged as one of the brightest young stars in MLB this season. He is the Marlins’ regular starting second baseman, and when he is on the field, he shows why he is a serious contender for the National League Rookie of the Year Award. In his first full season, Chisholm is one of only 12 players in the majors with at least 11 home runs and 11 steals.

However, the speedy second baseman has miss some time this year due to injury and appears to be headed to the injured list again. It remains to be seen how sever the injury is.

The Marlins continue their road trip, taking on the Washington Nationals in a three-game series at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., starting Monday at 7:05 p.m.
