Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. may still qualify as a rookie in the Major League Baseball (MLB) but his play on the field, and his batting average, is indicative of a player who has has been in the league for many years. With the MLB All-Star voting ending on June 24, it is time that The Bahamas as a nation rally behind the Miami Marlins’ second baseman and vote for him to get him in the top three and into the second phase of voting.
In the latest All-Star ballots that came out on Monday, Chisholm was 10th in voting among National League (NL) second basemen with 70,147 votes.
The top vote-getter so far is the Atlanta Braves’ Ozzie Albies with 295,478 votes. Right behind Albies is the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Adam Frazier with 201,886 votes. Rounding out the top three in total votes is the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Gavin Lux with 167,421 votes.
Voting can be done at https://ift.tt/3q8BUEU. Fans can vote up to five times per day every 24 hours, and voting ends on Thursday June 24 at 3:59 p.m.
This is the first phase of the All-Star ballot. If Chisholm finishes as one of the top three at his position, he will enter phase two where he will get a chance to be voted in as a starter. That phase will take place June 28-July 1. The MLB All-Star Game is set for July 13 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
Chisholm and the Marlins just completed a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, losing all three of those road games. They lost the opener on Monday 4-2, then suffered a 2-1 loss on Tuesday before finishing with a 1-0 loss on Wednesday.
Chisholm finished 1-for-12 in the series with two runs batted in (RBIs). It was a tough series for the second baseman and he will look to shake it off when they start another road series against the Chicago Cubs today.
On the season, the left-handed batter has a .265 batting average to go along with 24 RBIs, 24 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 49 games. In his 170 at-bats, the 23-year-old has 45 hits. Known for his ability to get big hits, he has eight home runs and is on the path to finish with at least 20 home runs. He has a slash line of .265/.339/.459 and has an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .789.
Chisholm has played 26 games at the second base and 23 games at the shortstop position.
The Marlins infielder cannot be counted out in the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year race. He is one of the most electrifying first-year players to watch in MLB and is a frontrunner for the NL top rookie award.
Known for his bold hair color, the rookie has made his mark this season with his ability to hit the ball and his fielding ability. He has been a part of some dramatic plays in his young MLB career. Chisholm’s speed and base-running ability has enabled him to steal nine bases – tied for number 15 in MLB.
The Marlins sport a 29-39 win/loss record on the season, and sit at the bottom of the NL East table – 12th in the NL.
The Marlins celebrated Bahamian Heritage Night at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, Saturday past. There was Junkanoo music, the Bahamian anthem was sung and Bahamian Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Iram Lewis threw out the first pitch. Bahamian cuisine was on sale as The Bahamas’ National Flag was on display around the stadium and on the jumbo screens during the national anthem and at various points of the game.
Most importantly, the Marlins were able to come away with a 4-2 win over the Braves.
