A total of 13 junior sailors proudly represented The Bahamas at the 2021 Optimist North American Sailing Championships (OptiNAMs) in Nuevo Vallarta, on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The competition was held May 29-June 5.
After two days of qualifying races, Team Bahamas had two sailors reach the prestigious Gold Fleet. They were 13-year-old Craig Ferguson and 15-year-old Joshua Weech. The latter represented The Bahamas at the last Optimist World Championships in Antigua in 2019.
Ferguson went on to finish 24th while Weech placed 49th.
Kaemen Floyd was impressive in the Silver Fleet where he finished first. The 12-year-old finished with all first-place finishes in the finals. Also in that fleet were Matthew Reid and Finley McKinney-Lambert. Reid placed third and McKinney-Lambert placed sixth.
The team of Bahamian sailors comprised of 13 sailors – nine boys and four girls from New Providence and Eleuthera aged 11-15 years. It was the largest group to ever represent The Bahamas at an international optimist continental championship. They were coached by Robert Dunkley and Martin Manrique.
There were 12 countries in total that participated in this year’s OptiNAMs, and there were 110 sailors overall.
The Bahamas hosted OptiNAMs in 2019 at Montagu Bay in New Providence.
There will be five junior sailors who will represent The Bahamas at the next major international optimist regatta – the world championships. That event is set to take place on Lake Garda, between Venice and Milan, in Italy, from June 30-July 10.
