Former Cabinet Minister Vincent Peet is in police custody, police confirmed today.
Officers of the Financial Crimes Unit are questioning him in reference to a financial matter. Police said Peet, who is an attorney, will be released on police bail and is expected to be charged in court on Monday.
Peet, the former minister of financial services in the first Christie administration, ran as an independent candidate in the 2017 general election.
He represented North and the Berry Islands as the Progressive Liberal Party MP between 2002 and 2012. In 2011, Peet announced his decision not to run in the 2012 general election soon after an issue involving $180,000 in client funds was made public.
At the time, Peet said there was no legal action pending against him over the matter and that he and his client are working on resolving the “misunderstanding”.
The former MP was also embroiled in controversy in late 2006 when it was revealed that his chauffeur stole money — which was in U.S. currency — from his bedroom closet in 2003.
Peet maintained that he converted the money to U.S. currency in order to pay his daughter’s tuition at a university in the United States.
