With summer camps non-existent in 2020 due to COVID-19, with the world returning to some sense of normalcy as people adjust to living in a pandemic era, summer camps have returned, and The Nassau Guardian has found a few camps filled with excitement, discovery and adventure for children to explore through hands-on projects and daily activities.
With each child unique, parents are certain to find a summer camp beneficial for their child/children which will allow them to engage, and develop socially, emotionally and cognitive skills. Participation in summer camps also allow children to create memories that last a lifetime.
The camps we have found offer a variety of activities, projects and more with interesting themes offered.

Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre Kids Summer Camp
Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre’s Kids Summer Camp will offer fun and educational activities to fit all skill levels and abilities. It’s an experience that they say will enrich children for a lifetime featuring six different experiences for children ages six through 12 years old, between June and August.
The Avian Express will be held June 28-July 2; Creative Critters, July 12-16; Eco-Evolution, July 19-23, The Great Garden Escape, July 26-30; The Circle of Life, August 2-6; and Ardastra’s Got Talent, August 16-20.
Kids hopping onboard The Avian Express will learn about their avian ambassadors from various countries and regions and about the plethora of bird species that call Ardastra home. They will also get a sneak peek into their habitats in the wild and the threats the species face around the world. This camp is all about the birds.
Creative Critters will be dedicated to highlighting the amazing creativity of the animal ambassadors. From adaptations to learned behaviors, campers will explore how animals creatively overcome obstacles in the wild by becoming “creative critters” themselves. This week will be chockful of crafts, performances and gallons of paint.
Eco-Evolution camp is all about the evolution of the environment and the animals that call it their home. With the help of Ardastra’s animal ambassadors, campers will learn about the adaptations that animals have acquired to help them survive in the ever-evolving wild. Campers will also learn about the impact of climate change and other human-driven environmental changes that impact animals around the world.
For “The Great Garden Escape” themed week, Ardastra Gardens will be transformed into an outdoor escape room. Utilizing knowledge gained throughout the week, campers will move their way throughout the gardens, solving interactive puzzles and riddles to “escape” sections of the garden each day. Campers will have an opportunity to meet and interact with different animal guides along the way who will help them on their quest.
For “The Circle of Life” kids will learn that every animal holds a special place in the circle of life. Throughout the week, campers will learn about the role of organisms in their respective ecosystems. From microscopic organisms to apex predators, campers will gain an appreciation for all organisms – big and small, and learn about how human actions can disrupt the delicate balance of the circle of life.
The final camp “Ardastra’s Got Talent” will showcase that the Ardastra’s animal family has got talent – from neat adaptations to cool colors and unique tricks. Campers will have the opportunity to learn about the skills that the animals have evolved or learned, and have the opportunity to show their fellow campers their own special talents. The camp talent show ends the summer camp series with a bang.
Ardastra’s Kids Summer Camp takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at a cost of $135 per child per week, for one non-member child; each additional non-member child is $121.50; $110 each member child; with an optional $30 per week lunch package. Pre-registration and pre-payments are required for this camp.
National Art Gallery of The Bahamas Mixed Media Art Summer Camp
The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) will hold an onsite/virtual hybrid Mixed Media Art Summer Camp for children ages five to 17 years at the museum, July 5-23.
Campers will participate and learn visual art techniques, explore different avenues of creativity and develop their knowledge of art. Under the theme “Jammin’ Visuals” they will investigate the relationship between the visual arts and music, completing one major artwork during each one-week session. Parents can register their child/children for one week or more.
The camp will encourage students to take a comprehensive look at the relationship between art and music. The immersive sensory experience will look at how the visual arts can be used to complement, enhance, and in some cases, make possible the presentation of the musical arts and vice versa. Students will delve into the world of music to create artwork that has lyrical, emotive and performative elements. They will explore both mediums to discover their complementary and juxtaposed traits, resulting in the ability to merge and use them to their fullest extents.
NAGB officials say like music, the creation of visual art can be an individual or communal venture, but ultimately, it demands to be shared. And as such, students will therefore work collaboratively on an exhibition that dances and sounds its melody loudly for all to see and hear. The aim is to use the visual and auditory components to ignite emotions, especially joy, in a time when our collective bliss and comfort have been upended.
The camp’s closing exhibition will be a reflection of the thoughts, feelings, and voices of participants.
The NAGB’s onsite/virtual hybrid Mixed Media Art Summer Camp (MMASC) is designed to give campers the opportunity to work with trained art teachers and NAGB staff on property for two days, with the remaining three days set aside for virtual classes. While at the museum, campers will create an art piece, paint a mural with a professional muralist and participate in onsite gallery tours and other theme-related activities. The virtual lessons are pre-recorded, allowing campers to work on their projects at a pace that is comfortable for them – however, all pieces must be completed and brought to the NAGB by August 3 and will be featured in the MMASC art exhibition.
The cost is $150 per week and all drinks, food, snacks, activities (onsite only) one MMASC t-shirt and materials are included in the fee.
To register visit nagb.org.bs or contact zmunroe@nagb.org.bs.
