Happy Mother’s Day

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” – Proverbs 31:25-28

This coming Sunday, May 9, is Mother’s Day, an incredibly special day for many people around the world. People from all walks of life will be celebrating in different ways. In fact, this year, to make up for last year, within limits, they will celebrate a bit lavishly.

Last year, because of the pandemic, except for those who lived together, families could not celebrate in the usual way. Restaurants were closed and people were, for the most part, confined to their residence.

This year, however, things will be different. Protocols have been relaxed and families can go out to celebrate with their mothers.

While many will celebrate with their mothers this year, there are many who will not. They have lost their mothers to the pandemic.

During the past year, while the COVID-19 pandemic raged and ravaged the world, many mothers died without family and friends around. The pandemic caused isolation in hospitals and rest homes, consequently, they died without the presence of their family.

The loss of a mother is most devastating to any family. This year, like many, I will not have the opportunity to celebrate with my mother, whose birthday falls close to Mother’s Day.

My dear mother passed on March 26. She has gone home to be with the Lord. Yes, she now rests in Christ, her savior.

I am so thankful for the life of my dear mother, a godly woman, who frequented the place where she could hear the word and promises of God, her church. She was a wonderful woman.

My mother raised nine living children. After having raised her children, she adopted two infant siblings, and raised them in the same loving care as she did with her own children.

She loved children and people. She always treated people with respect and taught her children to do likewise.

My mother was God-fearing and brought her children up in the ways of the Lord. She never cloaked her children in any wrongs. We were not permitted to enter her house with anything for which we could not give a good account.

Yes, my mother was a special individual. She gave unselfishly to her God, her family, her church and to her community.

She loved the word of God, the message which gave her salvation. Jesus was her anchor in life and is her anchor now in death.

Now, all the longing for deliverance is fulfilled. All the promises of God have become a reality for her. That is our comfort now. Yes, even though we mourn, we take comfort that our mother has reached the final goal of every Christian. Happy Mother’s Day! Amen.
