Bahamian Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. has taken Major League Baseball (MLB) by storm this season.
Highlighted by theScore (Score Media and Gaming Inc.) as the frontrunner for the National League Rookie of the Year Award, the nifty infielder for the Miami Marlins has a slash line of .275/.336/.480 with five home runs, 11 RBIs and 15 runs scored. He has 28 hits on the season in 102 at-bats and an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .817. Chisholm is regarded by Statcast and mlb.com as one of the most exciting young stars in MLB, and now the whole world is reading about the young Bahamian phenom.
He was featured in the lead story on mlb.com on Tuesday.
The article, entitled “The Bahamas is no longer a baseball secret”, written by Marlins Beat Writer Christina De Nicola, details the upbringing of Chisholm and shines a spotlight on baseball talent in The Bahamas and how it has exploded internationally.
Going into last night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, Chisholm was hitless in his last seven at-bats, dropping his batting average to below .300, but he has tremendous upside and is projected to be a possible 30-30 threat this season, barring injury.
Chisholm is the regular starting second baseman for the Marlins and has assumed the lead-off role in batting for one of baseball’s up-and-coming and more dynamic teams. Going into last night’s game, the Marlins were tied for second in the National League East Division with a 23-24 win/loss record – just a game behind the front-running New York Mets (21-20). Going into last night’s game, the Marlins had won four of their last five and five of their last seven. The result of last night’s game was unavailable up to press time.
Defensively, Chisholm has 80 assists and 31 putouts in 114 total chances, splitting time between second base and shortstop. He has just three errors on the season and has been a part of 19 double plays. He has started 23 games at second base and four at shortstop.
The 23-year-old infielder missed time this season with a strained left hamstring, but is back doing what he loves which is making dazzling plays and swinging a hot bat for the Marlins and electrifying fans everywhere with his speed-power combination at the plate and on the basepaths.
Chisholm has eight stolen bases on the season – tied for fourth in the National League, and tied with four others for sixth in all of Major League Baseball.
Chisholm and the Marlins play the third of a four-game set against the Phillies this evening, and travel to Fenway Park to play the Boston Red Sox in Boston, Massachusetts, on the weekend.
