Rowing regatta takes place at Lake Cunningham

The Nassau Rowing Club (NRC) held the 2021 New Providence Secondary Schools (NPSS) Rowing Regatta at Lake Cunningham this past Saturday, and the young rowers were excited to compete.

Eleven schools were in action on the water of the 1,000 meter (m) course at Lake Cunningham.

One of the fastest races of the day featured the Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) girls going up against a mixed schools boys team in the ninth and final race of the morning – the varsity quad.

It was a close race until the halfway point when the LCIS crew of Sascha, Jessica and Poppy Proffitt along with Lilly Rose Jamieson picked up the pace to leave the boys behind, winning in 4:18.08. The boys team of Kenneth Hart (Nassau Christian Academy), Jamal Hanna (C.R. Walker); and David Roy and Will Watson (LCIS) finished in 4:26.32.

“I think it was a good race. We went in with a solid plan and were able to follow through. We were able to pick it up at the 500-meter mark and that was where we were able to make the biggest move on the boys. That was what pulled us through in the end,” Jamieson said.

For Sascha Proffitt, she said that it is always a big competition between the boys and the girls at LCIS.

“We worked hard for it. It was very competitive,” she said.

Rowing coach at NRC, Karianne Kulig, said the event was a success.

“The regatta went well. The races went off on time and we were able to stick to the schedule. Everyone did their best and I am excited with the results. I am so happy to see the kids competing. Being on the water is amazing. A lot of the kids started rowing this year and some have been rowing for three years. Everyone is happy with how they did,” Kulig said.

In the novice boys double, Marios Alexander from Windsor Preparatory and Hanna teamed up to win that event in 6:03.03. They finished ahead of Logan Bethel from Genesis

Academy and Harper Romer who clocked 6:28.04.

Alexander was happy with his team’s performance, saying they were able to stick to the plan.

President of the NRC, Kyle Chea, was impressed with the junior rowers.

“I’m impressed with the level of competition across our junior program – the NPSS Regatta is one of a few opportunities they get to race, and they keep raising the standard. Even more impressive is that some of them have rowed for less than six months, which is not only a testament to their dedication and passion for the sport, but the level of instruction we provide at the Nassau Rowing Club,” Chea said.

Other winners included Roy and Will Watson (LCIS) in the junior male double (4:28.81), Jessica Proffitt in the junior girls singles (5:01.97), and Hunter Shouldice and Tasneem Karabas (Boost Academy) in the novice boys/mixed doubles (5:41.94).

According to Chea, the NRC is looking to have autumn regattas to give the young rowers more competitive exposure. He also hopes to have them compete in the Head of Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts – the world’s largest regatta. The NRC will monitor the public health situations in The Bahamas and abroad before making a decision.

The NRC has grown by leaps and bounds from six members and one boat in 2012 to over 40 members and 14 boats in 2021. Their youngest member is 11 years old and the oldest is 72 years old. The club is committed to developing the premier competitive rowing program in The Bahamas for rowers of all experience, ages and fitness levels.

The first NPSS Rowing Regatta was staged in February 2020 – right before the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in and affected The Bahamas.
