Evans falls just short of Olympic ‘A’ standard

Multiple national record holder in swimming Joanna Evans was in action at the 2021 TYR Pro Swim Series and fell short of attaining the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics ‘A’ standard in the 800 meters (m) freestyle over the weekend.

The meet was held at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Also swimming at that meet were Bahamians Laura Morley and the two Higgs sisters – Albury and Lilly.

Evans had an entry time of 4:08.71, and swam out of lane six in the last of four heats in the 800m free. The former University of Texas Longhorns swimmer was able to clock a time of 4:07.95 to finish the preliminaries with the third-fastest time. Her splits were 28.82, 30.76, 31.22, 31.42, 31.38, 31.59, 31.56 and 31.20 seconds. Evans fell five hundredths of a second short of the Olympic ‘A’ standard time of 4:07.90. She once again was able to go under the Olympic ‘B’ standard time of 4:15.34.

Her personal best in that event is 4:07.60 – a time she swam at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Only Leah Smith and Emma Nordin clocked faster times than Evans. Smith swam the fastest time of 4:07.13 and Nordin clocked 4:07.78.

In the final, Evans swam slower as she finished the race in 4:15.07 to place eighth.

The Grand Bahamian was also in action in the 200m free. She swam out of lane three in the fourth out of five heats. Evans came in with a time of 1:58.43, and was unable to lower her entry time as she finished the heat in 2:02.43 to finish with the 16th fastest time out of 37 total swimmers.

Morley and the Higgs sisters swam in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events. In the 100m breast, Morley swam in heat three, Lilly Higgs swam out of lane four and Albury Higgs swam in the fifth and final heat.

Out of the trio, Lilly Higgs finished with the fastest time when she clocked 1:10.23 to finish 11th overall. Albury Higgs finished 27th overall with a time of 1:12.22 and Morley clocked 1:12.97 to finish 30th. In the ‘B’ final, Lilly Higgs swam 1:10.47 for a seventh-place finish in that final.

In the 200m breast, Albury Higgs and Laura Morley swam out of heat three while Lilly Higgs was in the fifth and final heat. After the preliminaries, Morley was the highest placed Bahamian at fifth after touching the wall in 2:30.87. Albury Higgs finished 12th overall with a time of 2:33.85 and her sister finished three spots behind her at number 15 after posting a time of 2:34.57.

In the ‘A’ final, Morley clocked 2:30.97 to finish sixth. Albury Higgs was fifth in the ‘B’ final when she lowered her heat time to post 2:32.74. Lilly Higgs was also able to lower her heat time when she swam 2:33.58 to finish eighth in the ‘B’ final.

The qualifying period for swimming for the Olympics ends on June 27. The last opportunity for Bahamian swimmers to dip below the qualifying standards will be at the 2021 REV National Swimming Championships, set for June 24-27 at the Betty Kelly-Kenning National Swim Complex.
