Minister’s son found dead

Minister of the Environment and Housing Romauld Ferreira’s teenage son was found dead on the floor of his bedroom in his home off Nassau East Boulevard yesterday, police reported, adding that his death is being investigated as a suicide.

An emotional Ferreira cried as he watched police and EMS personnel move the body of his son, who is believed to be between 13 and 18, to a hearse shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Hysterical cries echoed from within the house.

“Sometime after 2 p.m. today’s date, police received reports of a body being found unresponsive here at the Ferreira’s residence,” Assistant Superintendent of Police Audley Peters told reporters outside the home.

“The officers responded and on their arrival, they were directed to a room where they found a juvenile male laying on the ground unresponsive. EMS (emergency medical services) was called in and performed CPR.

“However, they were not successful in resuscitating the juvenile.”

He said the boy was found with “no signs of injuries”.

Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Carl Culmer expressed condolences.

“I offer condolences on behalf of the leader of the party, most honorable Dr. Hubert Minnis, officers and members of the party,” he told The Nassau Guardian.

“In fact, I’m at Romi’s now. Some of the party members are here with him trying to hold him up and giving him our prayers.”

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest added, “Sonia and I send our deepest condolences to minister Romauld Ferriera and his family on the sudden passing of his teenage son.

“No words seem appropriate in these circumstances and so we send our love and prayers to and for them as they try to come to terms with this tragic loss.”

Peters noted that it has been “a very overwhelming couple of months”.

“We encourage persons who may be feeling pressured to take a second look, take a second step back and consider their options,” he said.

“Whether it be financial pressure, emotional pressure or pressure from relatives, there’s always someone they can find to talk to.

“If that option is not available to them, they can also do things like walk on the beach, self-talk or practice the art of moment meditation where they use candle lights and quiet their minds down to assist them to deal with the day’s events and not to project themselves or their lives too far into the future…

“…The truth is we can only handle the matters of the day.”

He encouraged individuals to practice some form of self-encouragement to deal with the pressures that they’re feeling.
