After not playing in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League regular season since November 22, Bahamian Jonquel Jones made an appearance yesterday. In a game between her team UMMC Ekaterinburg and Nadezhda Orenburg, they prevailed 82-49 on their home court at the Palace of Sporting Games in Yaketerinburg, Russia.
The Grand Bahamian finished the night shooting 7-for-11 from the field to score 15 points in the victory. She was able to knock down one shot from beyond the three-point arc in three attempts. Jones was two rebounds shy of a double-double on the night as she pulled down eight rebounds. Defensively, she came up with one block.
Her 15 points was the second-highest scoring output on the team as Breanna Stuart and Maria Vadeeva both finished with 16 points in the win.
The win was their eighth of the season as they remain undefeated, but still sit in second place in the standings behind league leaders Dynamo Kursk (9-0). With that loss, Nadezhda stays in third position with a 4-3 win/loss record.
The Connecticut Sun player got on the scoreboard when she hit a shot from beyond the arc with 3:41 to go in the first quarter. Her team led 7-2 at that point. That was part of a 12-2 start for the home team as they finished the quarter with a 25-10 lead.
UMMC went on to outscore their opponents 27-18 in the second quarter. At the half, Jones and her team led comfortably, 52-28.
In the second half, UMMC took their feet off the gas pedal a bit, scoring just 30 points, but their defense only allowed 21 points. Jones and the other starters were able to get some rest for their next game in the second half.
UMMC dominated the paint, scoring 50 points compared to 26 points in the paint for Nadezhda.
In five regular season games, Jones is averaging 19.8 points per game in 25 minutes of play per contest. Her points per game is the second highest in the league behind Vadeeva who is averaging 20.4 points per game. Jones is averaging 9.2 rebounds per game and shooting an average clip of 66 percent from the field. In addition she is averaging 2.8 assists, one steal and 1.6 blocks per contest.
In her previous game, Jones finished with 19 points as she helped her team to a 104-71 EuroLeague victory over Latvian club TTT Riga. They outscored the Latvian club 60-30 in the paint to power their way to victory.
Jones shot 8-for-9 from the field including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point territory. She also had nine rebounds.
Next up for UMMC is an away clash against the league leaders Dynamo Kursk on Sunday, December 20, at the Dynamo Sports Complex in Kursk, Russia. This will be Jones and her team’s final regular season game for the calendar year. They return to action after that on Wednesday January 6.
