‘1 in every 100 Nassauvians has been infected with COVID-19’

One in every 100 Nassauvians has been infected with COVID-19, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pearl McMillan said on Friday.

Her comments come as the number of COVID-19 cases in the capital continues to increase.

During a virtual press conference at the Ministry of Health, Dr. McMillan noted that New Providence remains the epicenter for COVID-19 in The Bahamas

“Nearly all new cases are concentrated on New Providence,” she said.

“…The stark reality is that one in every 100 Nassauvians has been infected with COVID-19.”

Dr. McMillan said projections suggest that New Providence cases will continue to increase.

However, she said it is possible to slow the spread if residents follow the health guidelines.

Up to Thursday, The Bahamas had recorded 4,230 cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, there were 3,099 cases of COVID-19 on New Providence; 635 on Grand Bahama; 145 on Abaco; 54 on Bimini; 32 on Exuma; 22 on Eleuthera; 19 on Inagua; 15 on the Berry Islands; 12 on Long Island; eight on Cat Island and Andros; seven on Acklins; five on Crooked Island; and three on Mayaguana.

Dr. McMillan said as cases increase the healthcare system and healthcare workers are becoming more overwhelmed.

“They are stretched and we must decrease our cases,” she continued.

According to McMillan, to date, 243 healthcare workers have tested positive for COVID-19; 226 have had high risk exposure; 962 have had low risk exposure and are being monitored and 416 were cleared to return to work in mid-September.

Up to yesterday, COVID-19 deaths stood at 96. Additionally, health officials are investigating the deaths of 15 people.

“It is noted however that thus far for the second wave, there has been an average of one COVID death each day,” Dr. McMillan said.

Wells noted that the mortality rate stands at 2.27 percent.

Ahead of the second wave, there were 11 COVID-19 deaths in The Bahamas.
