Despite the widespread initial opposition, Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) has not taken budget billing off the table, the corporation’s Director of Public Relations Quincy Parker said.
BPL announced in August that it would reintroduce the practice of budget billing as an option for customers who prefer a predictable bill amount every month, rather than fluctuating bills.
Parker said although the program is still on the table, BPL has to determine if and when it will be implemented.
“BPL has not taken budget billing off the table. We have not introduced budget billing as yet. We have said that budget billing is something we are considering and if we determine that it is in the best interests of our customers and the company, we will advise with appropriate notice that budget billing will be implemented,” he said.
“We are still considering its appropriateness for our situation. Therefore, we cannot say at this time when it might be implemented. Again, should it be determined to be appropriate and desirable for us, we will give notice.”
Budget billing averages a customer’s monthly bill based on past usage, as opposed to actual usage based on monthly meter reading.
Electricity costs typically spike in the summer and dip in the winter based on consumer use and fluctuating fuel surcharges, a trend BPL was seeking to end. BPL’s recent hedging transaction has set a fuel surcharge of 10.5 cents for the next year and a half.
