Munnings, Oliveirense improve to 3-0

Bahamian professional basketball player Travis Munnings and his Uniao Desportiva (UD) Oliveirense Basquetebol team are off to a hot start in the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol after winning their third straight game with an 80-68 victory over Maia Basket Clube at the Pavilion Municipal Nortecoope in Maia, Portugal, this past Saturday. They remain undefeated on the season.

Munnings notched the second highest team points on the night with 14 points. He completed a double-double on the night when he grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds – five offensive and five defensive. Munnings saw 26 minutes of playing time. He was able to come away with two steals.

It was not his best shooting night on the season as he finished 5-for-16 from the field to shoot 31 percent. He was 2-for-9 from three-point territory. The small forward was able to finish 2-for-4 from the charity stripe. He dished out four assists in the win.

With the 3-0 win-loss start of the season, the defending champions are on the right path to repeat as champions once they keep up this level of play.

Oliveirense was a problem for the home team on the defensive side. They stole the ball 15 times and forced 24 turnovers as they had 23 points from turnovers compared to Maia scoring just nine points from turnovers.

It was an even first half as Munnings and his team got off to a slow start as that period ended tied at 18-18.

The second quarter belonged to Oliveirense. With 1:54 remaining in the quarter, Munnings was able to connect on a three-pointer to take his team up by seven with a 41-34 lead. Maia was able to score one more point before the quarter ended with Oliveirense up 41-35 at the end of the first half. They outscored their opponents 23-17 in that quarter.

The third quarter was a little back-and-forth on the scoreboard before the visitors decided to turn up the tempo. With 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, the Bahamian grabbed an offensive rebound and made the layup for the second chance points. That make put his team up by double-digits for the first time of the game as they led 52-42.

At the end of the quarter, they had already put the game away, leading 60-45 after outscoring Maia 19-10.

Munnings and Oliveirense managed to hold off any possible comeback the home team had planned.

On October 17, Munnings and company took advantage of Galitos-Barreiro to win 88-57 on the road. Munnings went off in 35 minutes of play as he scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and finished with four dimes. He was also 10-for-17 from the field. He was named the league’s Player of the Week.

On the season, the small forward is averaging 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He also has 1.7 swipes a game.

Next up for Oliveirense is a home game against Clube Amigos do Basquete (CAB) Madeira at Dr. Salvadoe Machado Pavilion in Oliveira de Azemeis, Portugal. Tip-off time is 7:30 Portugal time.
