With eviction hearings suspended, one landlord resorted to threats of bodily harm to compel a tenant to vacate his premises.
Police arrested Nassau Village resident Philip Carey after he told his tenant, Patrice Mackey, that he would “chop her with a cutlass and mince her like crawfish”.
Carey, 54, admitted the charge of threats of harm when he made his initial court appearance before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on May 29.
Carey, who did not have a lawyer at the arraignment, said that his wife gave Mackey an eviction notice on April 8.
The argument that resulted in his arrest took place on May 26 when Mackey came upstairs where he lived, Carey told the court.
Carey rents rooms at his home and Mackey lives downstairs, the court heard.
Carey said that he did not own a cutlass and neither did police find one when they searched his home.
However, Carey said that he “did curse” during his argument with Mackey.
Forbes ordered Carey to pay a $400 fine to avoid spending three months in prison.
The magistrate suggested that Carey could have handled the situation differently.
Forbes asked, “Why haven’t you made any other attempts to remove the tenant legally from your premises, as opposed to resorting to threats?”
This was not Carey’s first run-in with the law. The prosecutor told the court he has prior convictions for selling drugs.
New civil trials are suspended as a result of curtailed court operations during the coronavirus pandemic.
