Continuing with its efforts to restore electricity to Abaco following Hurricane Dorian, Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) said yesterday that power has been restored in Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Sweetings Village.
“BPL is pleased to announce the re-energization of our overhead systems on Elbow Cay and Man-O-War Cay,” a statement issued by the company read.
“On both cays, BPL has installed temporary generation size to provide the necessary supply until work to reconnect the cays to the mainland is complete.
“Additionally, on the mainland, the remaining components for Sweetings Village have been received and installed. We have also energized our systems in the Sweetings Village area.”
BPL reminded that although the areas are now powered, customers must first “make application to the Ministry of Works for the needed inspections and to provide BPL with a copy of the installation approvals once received” before electricity can be restored to their homes.
It also said that the northern end of Treasure Cay – Ocean Boulevard, Madeira Park, Dommy Villa, Buckingham Beach – is in the process of being restored in sections; with works on Pelican Shores and Murphy Town/Forest Drive, from Ben Curry Drive to CMI Church, set to begin today.
The restoration schedule for other areas, according to the statement, is: Murphy Town Boulevard, from Forest Drive Way to Zion Baptist Church starting June 21; the southern end of Treasure Cay starting June 23 and Government Subdivision starting June 26.
The Little Orchard area is scheduled to complete “HV works and energization” on July 20.
BPL is awaiting the arrival of equipment to carry out subsea cable replacements in Marsh Harbour/Matt Lowe’s Cay and Matt Lowe’s Cay to Man-O-War Cay, the company said.
Hurricane Dorian, the most powerful storm on record to hit the country, devastated Abaco and Grand Bahama in September.
Nine months later and into this year’s Atlantic hurricane season, some areas on both islands remain in ruin; with some still without running water or electricity.
