“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” – Psalm 34:8
Among knowledge gained at an early age were the names of the five senses – hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling and feeling. Although these are important to our well-being, we do so take each and every one for granted.
In many countries, annual food, beverage and dessert events are held and top prizes awarded by judges of excellence, given to the person or team that produces the item with the best taste, smell and presentation. Here, at home, it is a social gathering for wine and cheese tasting and free-for-all grill and chill.
With the global entry of COVID-19, one of the early symptoms of the new coronavirus is the inability to smell and taste. To be able to see your food that is creatively displayed and prepared and not be able to smell and taste it, is not good at all.
In our text today, the psalmist David is inviting all to a spiritual banquet feasting to taste and see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. How many times we smell the sweet aroma and see the juicy piece of beef or lobster, but it is not for our tasting or consumption.
I was but a child and on one of the visits to my paternal midwife grandmother, she had cooked a big pot of peas and rice and put it on the extension of the window sill for cooling. The scent was too much for the neighborhood thief and he went with the pot, but the scent led to the recovery in his mother’s kitchen.
My, my, how many of us have wasted precious time over the years, not logging on to the benefits of our Father God. We have used our eyes not to see the best in others and the beauty of the earth that surrounds us, but to only see the worst. We hear of the success of our friends, families and loved ones, but play a deaf ear, ignoring congratulations and best wishes.
We smell the aroma of the opening of doors of opportunities for the meek and lowly and put a frown of foul scorn upon our faces. We taste of the moral, spiritual and social blessings to the marginalized, and reject it and forcefully spit it out to be trodden upon the feet of the envious. We refuse to feel the pain of others because we have lost that loving feeling and compassion for others.
Today, let us resolve to begin new lives during this pandemic, not only by tasting and seeing what God has done for us as individuals and a people, but by using all the five senses that the Almighty God has bestowed upon us. Indeed, God has been good to all of us.
